Intellectual Property

Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute encourages the development of inventions and other intellectual creations for the best interest of the public, its scientists and research sponsors. After securing available protection for the creation, SBP will permit the disclosure of intellectual property by development and commercialization and/or publication. The term “intellectual property” includes any invention, discovery, trade secret, technology, scientific or technological development, computer software or other form of expression that is in tangible form.

SBP Business Development and Intellectual Property Management groups work closely with SBP researchers to identify patentable inventions and other intellectual property that may ultimately develop into commercial products or services to further translational research and patient care. Once patented, the IP team works with third-party businesses or organizations to leverage the Institute’s intellectual property. As a result of the cutting edge, world-class science carried out by our scientists, the Institute has a significant patent portfolio of more than 650 active patents.

The Institute is engaged in seeking corporate sponsorship for research conducted by our faculty and out-licensing patent assets and reagents. The Intellectual Property team facilitates the transfer of patent assets and reagents to the private sector or other organizations, optimizing overall benefits to the public.
