Ruth Claire Black currently leads Cal State Online, the system wide initiative of the California State University system focused on centralized online degree program delivery. As an educator, Ruth works tirelessly to create and improve access to formal and informal education options for students of all ages. “I am deeply committed to developing research and learning options designed to open up educational opportunities to new communities of learners that will benefit from a pathway to health, achievement and success.” Prior to joining the California State University System, Ruth spent ten years with Chapman and Brandman Universities where she served as Dean of Distance Learning and later as Associate Vice-Chancellor. Ms. Black has a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Irvine and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Vanderbilt University.
A recent breast cancer survivor herself, Ruth was drawn to the work of the Cancer Center and the Community Advisory Board as soon as she completed her treatments and surgeries. While Ruth is committed to supporting all forms of cancer research and efforts to find a cure, she is particularly interested in furthering research and understanding of genetic cancers.
